Questions to ask when you take a tour of an airport tower:
  • How do they monitor the airport surface, runways, taxiways?
  • How do they get their weather information? 
  • What do they do with that weather information?
  • How do they record ATIS?
  • Do they have radar?
  • How do they see incoming traffic?
  • Do they have any direction finding equipment to locate lost aircraft?
  • What if there is an accident at the airport?
  • How do they control runway lighting?
  • Where are the radios?
  • How many frequencies do they monitor at the same time?
  • Do you have special frequencies for military aircraft?
  • What are flight progress strips, how do you use them?
  • How do you keep track of proposed arrivals?
  • How do you create flight plans?  Assign transponder codes?
